I am an educator and consultant who focuses on engaging individuals and institutions in critical self-analysis and skill building in order to increase their capacity to identify and address barriers to access, equity, inclusion, and full participation and to develop policies and practices that proactively reduce barriers. I utilize an anti-oppression framework that increases understanding of the way the micro level (individual attitudes and behaviors), the meso level (departmental or divisional norms and practices), and the macro level (institutional policies) collectively shape an organization’s culture and impact its members. I work primarily in higher education but also provide education and consulting for secondary schools, non-profit organizations, and businesses.
I began my career in higher education teaching creative writing and rhetoric at the University of Alabama while also engaging in advocacy efforts to promote more inclusive campus policies and practices, which led to a shift in focus for my career in 2011. I worked for three years as the Assistant Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at Michigan Technological University, for four years as the Director of the GLBT Center at North Carolina State University, and for six years at Middlebury College (three years as the Director of Education for Equity and Inclusion and three years as the Assistant Vice President of Education for Equity and Inclusion). I currently serve as the Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion / Chief Diversity Officer at Queens University of Charlotte. I work closely with hiring departments on equitable and inclusive search practices; support the development of culturally responsive teaching, advising, and mentoring; collaborate with campus partners to advocate for and implement changes to institutional policies and practices; provide mediation to address conflict in the workplace; facilitate restorative justice processes in response to power- and identity-based harms; respond to bias incidents; and advocate for disability access and inclusion. I also serve on the Accessibility in the Academy National Advisory Council for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE).
